How does EMDR Therapy work?

EMDR Therapy is all about working with memories, body sensations and limiting beliefs - from past, present or future events. Memories getting triggered in your nervous system, as if they were stuck on repeat (often out of our awareness) - causing distress in your life or leading to miscommunications in your relationships; with loved ones, colleagues, intimate partners, & friends.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – I know it’s a bit of a mouthful, but it simply relates to the process of the therapy:

Eye Movement: we focus on a “target” (a memory) by activating a memory network. We do this by connecting to the distressing part of the image (you have in mind), the negative judgement or belief of yourself now, your emotional response and sensations (feelings) in your body. We use eye movements, also called a “bilateral stimulation” – this triggers the natural healing process of your brain. If we are online, we can use eye movements in a different way or another form of “bilateral stimulation”.

Desensitisation: We work together within the framework of EMDR therapy to reduce the emotional distress or to “desensitise” how you relate to specific memories or “targets”.

Reprocessing: Through the steps of EMDR and eye movements, we are “repairing” the mental injury from that traumatic or distressing memory / event in your life.

Through EMDR Therapy we make use of your brains natural healing process by developing a treatment plan, that includes past memories, current triggers and hopes for your future. This is our map to healing your trauma wounds; emotional distress connected to memories go away, and negative beliefs about yourself and the world change – you gain a different perspective of events and yourself.
